My process will go on (sing in Celine Dion voice)

I can't seem to shut down/abort a process , regardless of how many times I click the stop/abort button

When you press abort button abort flag is set.
The process is terminated once current action execution is completed.
or when progress is updated (In case of transformation/import).

Checking abort flag far too often has a massive negative impact on performance

In some cases it is better to kill app and start again

The problem is when it keeps running and running and running (which is the case here)

Maybe like abort a STOP everything right now button  

I have run some tests and here is what I've found
 
In  case of transformation execution is aborted once progress is updated

If you are loading 30 records per second that will take a while

Also if your reader source is very slow SQL statement execution is aborted once SQL statement is completed progress is updated
   
There is a minor issue a the moment when user presses Abort Button no message is written into the log,
this will be corrected in the next release
