A Tableau data extract file (TDE ) is a compressed snapshot of data stored on disk and loaded into memory as required to render a Tableau viz.

As Tableau technology partner we are constantly working on improving our ETL software integration with Tableau

We're excited to announce that, through the Hyper API integration our ETL software can now read Tableau Hyper Data Extract (.hyper) files as a data source
This applies to 64bit versions only.

The ability to extract data from Hyper files opens a number of interesting opportunities to our customers: for example, it is now possible to convert Tableau Hyper files to QlikView QVD files

Here how our customers use Advanced ETL Processor for data migration

Converting QVD files to TDE files

The largest QVD file has 22 million records and it is 5.9 gigabytes in size

Using Advanced ETL Processor 64 bit and latest tableau SDK (9.2)

It took 36 minutes to convert the data with an average speed of 10k per second.

Notes:

1. Performance depends on a number of factors: Hardware, hard disk performance, number of fields and the complexity of transformations
2. 32-bit version slightly slower for the file's creation
3. Always use the 64-bit version with large QVD's

The problem

One of our customers was having problems publishing tableau hyper files to the tableau online server. We asked them to grant us access. That was given and we started our testing. Here is the package we created. It has a loop object which is executed 40 times. The package uploads various hyper files. The file sizes are between 800k and 150mbs.

It takes 2.5 hours to execute the packages. During execution, the files are published non-stop about 400+ times. The package failed in our office several times but it was constantly falling on the customer site. We created 11 internal releases before we managed to fix the problem.

The solution

There were not specific failure patterns. All development was done according to API published by Tableau.

So what wee did is introduced more resilience.

 Advanced ETL Processor will try to connect the tableau server 5 times and once successful it will attempt to upload the files up to 3 times.
