Scheduling / Execution Agent Best Practices

Hi ETL-Tools!

I've watched the instructional videos and read the documentation and I'm still confused on the advantages / disadvantages of the Design Scheduler vs the Execution Agent. What situations would cause you to choose one over the other?

Specifically, I am trying to configure an export that occurs when the Advanced ETL is closed, to avoid failure caused by users accidentally closing the program. Is this possible with the Execution Agent? In all my attempts to set exports using the Execution Agent, the job only executes when the program is open. Is this an issue on my end with how I've set up the Agent, or does the agent not have this functionality?

Thanks a lot!

Hi and welcome to the forum

Advantages/disadvantages of the Design Scheduler vs the Execution Agent.

We recommend to all our users who want to run our software on the servers to use an execution agent.
Execution Agent offers two benefits over Design Scheduler.
  • It can run packages in parallel
  • Unattended execution.

Design Scheduler is still being used by some of our customers.

Also, the enterprise version is more expensive than the professional.

Working with the agent can be very confusing for new users so a while ago we created an article about it

If it does not help please post some screenshots here so we can see what is going on.

Please keep us posted on your progress, we are keen to make sure that it works the way you wanted

Thanks for getting back to me Mike!

I've attached some screenshots of the configuration settings. Generally:
- When the Designer is used and the program is open, the package runs and exports an xlxs file to the local drive
- When the Execution Agent is enabled and the program is open (see screenshots), the package runs and exports to the local drive

- When the Execution Agent is enabled and the program is closed, the job pauses and will resume when the program is open

I've followed the instructions in the videos, enabled the execution agent, and am using the Enterprise Version. Are there other configuration settings I need to enable or add another service to accomplish this?

Looks fine to me

I assume that you are working remotely on the server, is this correct?
Can you tell me your repository type, please

Can you also post executing log screenshot similar to this one

I'm using the default MS Access Repository.

As for the execution log, its blank (see below). It seems like things aren't being queued
