When I open the find tool and enter a search term, when I click ok the box simply closes and does not actually find the value... Is there something else I should be doing?

It is looking for exact match and selects it.
Try looking for something simple like Yes No
Using masks is not currently supported

Our developers have implemented your suggestion.

It was rather interesting intellectual challenge.

We did use exact match and it is very fast because we use binary tree for search.
Logic is very simple compare search string with the root value and depending on the result select right branch or left branch.
Cut branch in half compare values etc.

But for "Non Case Sensitive" search and "Like ?value?" search we could not use the tree.
So for this particular case we've created procedure which scans field values in parallel using all processor cores.

This method is slow for very large QVD's > 20mln records

I hope this is useful for you
Mike
