AETLE freezing after upgrade

AETLE 5.8.3.5
Windows Server 2012 R2 on Azure VM
SQL Server Express 2014

WE upgraded to 5.8.3.5 from 5.8.0.18 over a week ago.
1. created backup of repository under 5.8.0.18
2. installed the new version
3. created a new clean repository
4. restored the old repository

Since then it has been freezing every day. We have number of packages that run on a dailly or weekly basis. It would usually show a popup like this:


For a while It was consistently freezing after one specific package had run successfully, I tried
- resaving that package to the repository
- canceled its schedule entry and created a new one
- changed the order in the schedule
- running it manually - it runs fine
- finally removed it from the schedule

now it freezes on a different package


As you can see from this screenshot it appears to have started the 7:30 am process, but the status on the bottom says it's setting variables and the time is near the end of when the 1:00 am process was executing. It was often stuck on the Setting Variables like that also.
