Convert Excel to Tableau Hyper File Automatically

Hyper is Tableau’s fast, in-memory columnar storage format that replaces TDE. It offers improved performance, scalability, and support for larger datasets. By converting Excel to Hyper files automatically, you can reduce manual effort and accelerate dashboard refreshes.

1. Launch Advanced ETL Processor Enterprise
2. Create a Directory connection to your Excel file location.
3. Create a new Transformation:
   • Right-click a Transformation group and select New
4. Remove the Validator object to simplify the layout.
5. Add a Data Reader:
   • Select your Excel file (.xls or .xlsx)
   • Choose a worksheet, table, or named range
   • Use wildcard masks like *.xlsx for batch conversion

   Multiple Excel files and sheets are supported without manual formatting or cleanup.

6. Add a Tableau Hyper Writer:
   • Select your output folder and specify the Hyper file name (e.g., monthly_report.hyper)
7. Map the Fields:
   • Open the Transformer object
   • Map Excel columns to Hyper fields using drag-and-drop or AutoMap
   • Apply optional transformations such as text cleanup, numeric formatting, or type casting
8. Run the Transformation:
   • Click Execute to generate the Hyper file
   • Verify the output by loading the file in Tableau
9. Automate the Workflow:
   • Schedule Hyper creation daily, hourly, or on-demand
   • Trigger jobs based on file presence or system events
